Oil & Gas, The Best Prospect Industry Sector For You?

Oil & Gas Safety Passport is Your Key

After five years, since the 2014 global oil price dip, the Malaysian oil and gas industry has recovered with a leaner and stronger foundation. PETRONAS, the National Oil Company announced a net earning of US$13.4 billion for year 2018, which was more than the combined earnings of 2015 and 2016.

The oil and gas industry are most targeted industry for students and those who looking for higher pay. Like quote from Spiderman movie, “with a great power, comes great responsibility“… but change a bit to, “with higher salary, comes with higher severity“. (btw the salary package working offshore is not as higher before 2014)

We all know that statistic case for injury and fatality involve oil and gas industry is less compared with others. But this less frequency, if things goes wrong, once happen, there may become higher severity to People, Environment, Asset or Reputation (familiar term in O&G – PEAR).

The food was fantastic! 5 star service.

One of the initiatives to instill OSH to newcomers is to attend the compulsory class – OGSP. Only NIOSH has the right to conduct Oil and Gas Safety Passport (OGSP). This training program designed for specific target groups (1st timer) on specific OSH subjects. There will be assessment so as to ensure that the target groups acquire the appropriate and necessary safety and health knowledge required for their jobs and fulfill the legislative requirements and the companies’ policies. This one-day course is classified into two type of program OGSP Level 1 and Level 2 (for renew).

Fortunately, during my time with PETRONAS CARIGALI, NIOSH sent an invitation to become one of their trainers. There are series of training program to equip NIOSH trainer with right attitude and knowledge before granted them to be OGSP Trainer. Training such – TTT Basic and TTT Advance, TTT OGSP etc. are amongst compulsory training required by NIOSH, however, additional cert like PTW, LOTO, Emergency Drill etc. are good as supporting document for the process.

My 1st ever offshore experience is working onboard iconic PM9 offshore called BEKOK Charlie. Im happy to share my experience to participants on the safety practices on-board offshore platform and when I was working with all easy-going, friendly, experienced offshore crew. Some other offshore platform that I’ve privilege to work with are Pulai Alpha, Dulang Bravo, Duyong Bravo, Resak (as one of MHSEV) and all of the offshore has their own uniqueness identity. Im glad to be part of the team.

My happiness journey continues with the sharing activity to company that looking for OSH training, the journey expanded to other sector and surprisingly, I’ve noticed that Malaysia has one of the largest condom manufacturing located in Johor (huhu, Bangsa Johor kena tau ni, saya pun baru tau). This is when one of training provider request for me to conduct Emergency Response Preparedness training.

Whatever sector that you are working or choosing to be part of it is not important. What most important is – safety first!. If you can make safety is the 1st culture in your sector, and everybody can go home safely, that is most valuable moment that money can’t buy – happiness when seeing the loved ones returning home.

Stay safe!
